If you leave animations on, battles will take a lot longer. It's an amazing game, but you really need to turn off the 3D animations. Here's a video going from the map, to the animation, then back to the map. The second video shows a lot of battle scenes in a row if you haven't played the game and are interested in seeing how other classes and monsters attack.

Just think about how long each battle would be seeing the scenes 20-100 times per battle. With the scene off you just see the enemy judder with a hit sound. Also, certain magic spells are displayed on the map screen and in a 3D animation so will only show on the map.
