Microsoft reported a quarterly profit Thursday that rose from year-ago results, buoyed by the first full quarter of Windows 8 sales.The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant said operating income in its fiscal third-quarter rose 19% to $7.6 billion, or 72 cents per share, for the period ended March 31. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters forecast earnings of 68 cents per share. Revenue rose 18% to $20.5 billion, meeting analysts' forecasts. The company got a big boost from the Xbox and Kinect, sales of which grew 56% over last year. But Windows lifted earnings, with profit soaring 16%. "While there is still work to do, we are optimistic that the bets we've made on Windows devices position us well for the long-term," said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft.

Huh? Sales grew over last year? That doesn't sound right. Do they mean profits or something? There's no way sales increased.
