I never got very far in Super Mario 64, the plain look and not that great 3D control didn't make it my favorite. Wave race 64 was quite magical though, lovely water. And oot ofcourse.
For me the most magical was the first time I played civilization.
A friend brought it over and I was hooked instantly. I played it regularly for 2 years.
Doom and Descent brought me 3D magic. Before that 3D was very simple, wireframe or simple box shapes. Wolfenstein 3D might be the granddaddy but it didn't have the impact of Doom and Descent.
Actually that whole period was magical, from a bunch of black and white blocks and lines at the end of the 70's all the way to half-life. Multiple times a year there was something completely new and exciting, awesome 2 decades.
