I think Sony just lied to us... the real reason to remove the PS2 BC is because Sony wanted to sell PS2 games in the future (PSN versions and HD Collections)... not the cost itself.

The PS3 problem was the Blu-ray ($300) and Cell ($100)... all the others components were cheaper at launch.

Nah,  they made money with the PS2 sales and at that time they were desperate for some money.
