Also would Iincluding hd-dvd to 360 from the beginning have brought the console price up? I know it wasnt as expensive as bluray but would 360 have cost more like 350-400/450-500 depending on sku?

Maybe. It's also possible that MS could have gotten a good deal on HD-DVD drives if Toshiba and NEC wanted to help spread the format. HD-DVD drives don't use expensive Blue Lasers so it probably wouldn't have cost much more if anything. MS didn't want anything to do with the format war and instead hoped that discs would die in favor of digital distro.

HD DVD was selling several times better than Blu-ray for the longest time.  If Microsoft had put an HD DVD in the Xbox 360, I think the format war would have ended rather quickly.  Sure would depend on how much the HD DVD's were - and  how much it increased the cost.  (Yes HD DVD uses a blue laser too!)  It would have put so many more HD DVD’s out in the world ahead of the PS3.  I think Blu-ray would have been DOA. The PS3 would have been Betamax 2.0 and the PS4 would already be out for a couple of years now.   (Probably introduce with the new ‘Sony Move’ in 2010.)

It was Sony's clout, and ownership of some of the Movie Studios and Television that allowed them to push for other companies to go with Blu-ray over HD DVD. They were able to negotiate with other studios.  Yes, can store slightly more information than HD DVD, but enough in my option to really mater.

I think Microsoft's bigger mistake was not requiring a hard drive.  Otherwise, you could just load the game on your drive, and it doesn't matter how many disk it uses, as you just install and use the 'main' one to run the program.  Having to be able to run off the DVD has been a headache for developers.  But it allowed Microsoft to have a lower priced model.

Anyway, fun forum!

Uh, source for that? Bluray was always the popular format. And no HD DVD in the 360 wouldn't have affected the format war anyway. Are you even aware of the fact that the HD DVD addon released in the same month as PS3? So if 360 had a HD DVD drive the console would've been delayed to include the new format, not only that but the price of the  360 would've increased significantly, eliminating any advantage it had over PS3: being early in the market and price point.
