Have they? With 3DS and then Wii U, Nintendo has based their whole marketing on 3D and then HD experiences as being essential. With Wii U they made it a big goal to get all the AAA third party franchises, implicitly buying in to their idea of what gaming is.

Have you forgotten Nintendo has released 4 consoles with subpar hardware specs in the last 8 years ? And why wouldn't they try to get the third party's AAA games  ? For some sort of strange pride about not wanting games that focus on graphics ? It's a company, not some priest living in a temple.
