I've got great memories playing Halo 2 at my cousins house. Unfortunately, I never really got into the multiplayer.

For me the game that revolutionized online console play was Socom 2 (and Socom 1). Socom was such a great game. It had 50+ thousand people online every night at its peak. It may have been the first 'successful' online shooter of the gen. Socom 1 was released in 2002, Socom 2 was released in 2003.

In some ways online shooters have gone backwards.
Socom 2
-dedicated servers (you could actually pick the maps you wanted to play, if you only wanted to play 1 map you could)
-anyone could make their own custom rooms (for free)
-the game shipped with 22 maps (unheard of today)
-more meaningful deaths/kills (1 life per round, dying made you wait several minutes, punishing people who didn't have patience. Its not an ADHD friendly game.)
