Because they are hardcore games.  CoD is one of the most competitive games as well along with Fifa.  Just because they are mainstream does not mean that they are not hardcore.

I dont think a hardcore gamer plays the same 3 games every year and nothing else. A hardcore gamer plays many games over many genres
