It had the bigger first week doesnt really show much in terms of lifetime sales.
As for those numbers for Halo 3 and Moder Warfare. Call of Duy is more popular today than what it was 5 years ago. GTAIV released early 2008 where as Gears 2 i believe released on November 11th 2008.
Disregarding that Gears 2 disappointed many of the early adopters which was the hardcore fans of Gears. that was what my statement was. A lot of those people never returned to the series again.
I'm glad you liked Gears 2, but the original statement as it being a mess on launch still stands and many hardcore gears fans, me included will say that.

I can agree with that. There is no denying that it was a mess on launch day, thats a fact but what I hate and what I don't understand is the people who act as though its multiplayer was fundamentally bad. And when I say fundamentally bad I mean were there things in the multiplayer that were so terrible that they couldn't be fixed with a patch? No, not really.
The reality is, if you throw a couple patches at gears 2 it is basically identical to gears 1. The assets didn't change, the character models didn't change. Gears of War 2 could have been universally praised if not for its messed up launch.
The problem with 3 is that in many ways it really does try to reinvent the wheel. Everything changed, the character models, the art direction, even the gore engine. 3 has issues that go deeper than fixing with a patch. The maps were badly designed and weapons like the sawed off and retro aren't thing you can just get rid of. 3 fundamentally changed the series in a way that 2 never attempted but even then its sins are nothing compared to judgement. Judgement is completely beyond fixing. The control scheme has changed and everything about the game has been carefully and deliberately designed to play like a so called "fast paced" FPS. Judgement is rotten to the core! Epic is doing everything they can to move the series away from the deliberate methodical feel of previous titles to the tired old kill/spawn cylcle of every other mediocre shooter on the market and its a damn shame.

Well many of the early adopters for Gears 2 was upset on the big change. The gnasher was the most popular gun in the first and many looked at the new gnasher as being completely useless. Then the sniper which is probably the most popular power weapon had been faulty where it often times didn't register shots. The party sytem and player search was a mess and often took a while to find a game. remember they removed public games where people could host games the way they liked the games. This was good and bad. It was good that it got rid of the most over powered host in video games but it also took away custom setting and replaced it with a faulty search system. Grenade tags on walls was also pretty over powered early on.
Gears 3 had it's own set of problems as well but it did come out much smoother than gears 2. The gnasher was back to being a good weapon once again but unfortunetly the Sawed-Off pissed off a lot of people. Many people left gears 3 early on as well. The sawed-off was quickly fixed but the retro remains broken. The level design was pretty smooth as well but old maps did not fit in with the new style of Team Death Match because how the spawns work.
Weirdly I think most Gears fanatics will say that Gears 1 was the best because they have the fondest memories in it whether it be from nostalgia or they genuinely feel that way. Gears 1 had more problems than the other 2 but it weirdly connected with people regardless. They definitely made an addicting multiplayer for all 3 that requires skill rather than point and shoot, but they are all different than one another and all have their own problems. The only problem that seems to have stuck for all three was getting stuck on walls and sponging haha

This is exactly my point. Every gripe you listed about gears 2 is stuff that could be (and for the most part eventually was) fixed with patches. Those are skin deep problems. My problems with gears 3 and gears judgement are not superficial, they go deep.
And the gears 2 sniper had issues with registration but the gears 1 sniper had some major issues to. It was an incredibly cheap weapon in that game. A lot of things people didn't like about gears 2 came down to not being able to do cheap things. If you really look at the gears 1 shotgun without nostalgia goggles you'll see that people mostly only liked it because they could shoot from the center of the screen. Sorry, but that takes much less skill than the gears 2 shotgun where you actually have to learn where your shots are going as opposed to just looking at the center of the screen. Gears judgement goes back to center screen aiming but gears 3 actually used the same style as 2, it was just smoother due to better networking code.

They could have changed them and it took them too long to change them.
Gears 1's sniper registration wasn't faulty that often. 54% (Or maybe it was 44%. I'd have to go back and check) of my kills in ranked Gears was headshots so I do know a little bit about the sniper.
Gears 2's sniper was just infuriating. It fealt like 1 out of every 3 shots wouldn't register. I may be exaggerating a bit on that but it was pretty bad.
People likes the run and gun gameplay better than Gears 2's tactical gameplay. People don't seem to care anymore but it was a huge change from 1 to 2. The lancer was useless in Gears 1 where as it was a beast in Gears 2 and the gnasher was usless for a while. Gears 3 both of them was good gor very specific situations and allowed both types of players to be happy. The sniper was also fixed without the 3 second delay of the first game. You say that it is skin deep but so was gears 3. They could have easily nerfed the Sawed-Off and Retro which they did. The sawed-Off is complete garbage now and the Retro's hip fire is gone. It is still a little OP but it you can deal with it easily.
Now for wall bouncing. Gears 1 had a lot of wall bouncing where as gears 2 did not. They got rid of it and the fans was pissed about it as that is one of the things that seperated the good players from the bad players. Gears 3 brought wall bouncing back and even though it isn't as good as gears 1 it is still good. Even though I laugh at people trying to do it because they are just bad players trying to look cool.
I know Gears 2 fixed a lot of it's problems but the launch is what many fans remember it for. It was like people had been waiting for this amazing game and then played it and was left with a huge mess of problems.
As for the story, Horde, Co-op, etc all of it was amazing.

The lancer in gears 2 is not nearly as beastly as it is in gears 3. The gears 3 lancer is a viable primary. Try using a lancer as your main weapon in gears 2 against anyone with a pulse and you'll get eaten alive. In gears 3 rifles are all anybody uses because its so easy to get a kill with them.
And no the changes in gears 3 were not superficial. Something is wrong if you need to nerf a primary weapon to the point of being useless in the first place. The sawed off should have never been included. (Cliffy B admitted that) It changed the dynamic of the game. And if your argument is that gears 2 took too long to make changes then so did gears 3. They had an entire beta where everybody was complaining about those weapons then the game launched and they were stronger than ever. Gears 3 changes were not superficial at all, the graphics and art direction changed for the worse. That can't be fixed with a patch (In gears 2 only the lighting changed). The gore became cartoonish. I don't care if the shotty were perfected a kill in gears 3 will never be satisfying thanks to the retarded gib. The poorly designed maps and hand holding arcadey gameplay destroying immersion with points and ribbons every two seconds also couldn't be patched.
And lets not forget that gears 3 introduced microtransactions and began to set up the pay to win model. People running around with neon pink lancers... what a joke.
But your missing my point as usual. There are two types of gears fans from what I can tell. There are the ones that just care about nuts and bolts crap like shotgun spread and there are those of us that genuinely care about the series identity. The nuts and bolts stuff can always be fixed but its hard to get your identity back and its hard to get your soul back when you go down the microtransaction pay to win rabbit hole like gears 3 and judgement. There is no reason that gears 3 shouldn't have sold better than gears 2 by a very signifcant margin. But it didn't because the series is losing its identity.
And if run and gun is really what people want from a gears game then shouldn't judgement be the most popular gears yet? It is by far the most "run and gun" style gears yet. They even got rid of DBNO because that was obviously too time consuming. Make it faster, faster, faster. That'll get the COD zombies. But apparently the plan isn't working because judgement's player count is dropping rapidly.
