For some time i have been thinking on getting Mario 64, but i didn't, because i wanted to get the best version and i didn't decide if the virtual console version or the DS version is the best, and i am not the kind of person that purchase the same game twice.

So, what is more worth it? The DS or the VC version? What do you guys think?
I am not talking about price.

As far as I've known, they are the same game.

VC will be an exact replica of N64 copy. However, you can then get it at a reduced rate of $2 when it launches on WiiU VC which will add some features such as game state saves and gamepad playability.

DS version of course is already portable and frankly, I have no clue if anything was upgraded. But free + $2 later is a lot better than the $$ on DS.

The Ds version doesn't have analog stick support so you will have to play using the stylus to run.  It works pretty well however.  The Ds also supports multiplayer.  The graphis are, well different.  I kinda remember liking the Ds graphics the best.

I believe the DS version also has additional characters and stars, no?

To all of you:

Super Mario 64 DS is a remake of the N64 version, not just a port. It features quite a few new areas, Yoshi, Wario and Luigi as extra characters, all of them have special abilities which make certain Stars only reachable by certain characters. This also changes up the effects of the power-ups. From the top of my head; Mario is faster and has a floathing and flying power-up, Luigi can jump higher and has an invisibility power-up, Yoshi can hover (like in Yoshi's island) and Wario is stronger and heavier. Unsure about Yoshi's and Wario's power-ups.

There's more boss battles and the story is changed up a little. In each new area and in the existing courses there are more Stars to be found, for a new total of 150 or 30 extra Stars. Also, the graphics are a lot better (more polygons, better texture), but the enviroments are scaled down a bit I think. I mean, if something was 10 foot in the original, it's 9 foot on the DS version. Not completely sure, the 'feel' smaller to me anyway.

Control scheme is very different though and you'll likely find the original to be better. It's similar to Phantom Hourglass's control scheme only the gameplay is on the main screen. It's also possible to control with the D-Pad but you wouldn't have control over speed like you'd have with an analogue stick, you can still run though by holding B.

I'd say the DS version is the better version.

Biggest con however is that the DS game is still, even after over seven years and 10m copies sold, near full price (here in Europe anyway) versus the near free Wii version...
