There is some logic to that strategy when you look at it from MS's point. They want a mediacenter, not a console but a mediacenter which plays games. The best way for them to generated cash (or influence) is when those devices are online - eshop for games, movies and the rest.

The current customers who do not pay or use XBOX live at this moment, are in that aspect a bit irrelevant. To the "mediacenter" strategy, forcing out the non- online customers would be a small loss - they would bring in less revenue overal.

At least, that's how i would see it, from their point of view.

Microsoft might really believe this strategy could work. I doubt it will, but i can see why they would potentially implement it.

Well you know that's fine. I understand that, but that doesn't mean they have to force out the people who may not have an always online option.

The mediacenter approach is already adopted partially by the 360 and my 360 is pretty much always online. I almost never play it offline but there are others who do. I mean the consumers who want to take advantage of the always online features can and gain full access to all the mediacenter functionalities, while who don't have the option can just play their games on their console and ignore the other features.

If you are selling burgers to a customers and one of those customers doesn't want the tomato in it (like myself) and decides to throw it away, you don't just tell the customer that they can't buy the burger because they aren't eating the tomato. The logical thing to do would be to sell them the burger and let them decide how much or how little of it they want to eat.
