Did anyone find it weird that the guy from the nights watch, john snows friend was still alive in season 3? When I think back at the season 2 finale, it looked like that guy was a goner with all those white walkers.

I think how they handled that first scene (or just the Fist of the First Men in general, i.e. the ending of season 2 and beginning of season 3) was far inferior to how it was in the book. Sam killed an "Other" by himself. Really wonder why they changed that, as it was major for his character development

Wow I haven't read the books yet, but having Sam killed it would def have been better. The impression I got from Sam was that he was a coward. He didn't even bother fighting it and just try to squirm away.

Indeed, that's why it was important imo. But maybe they've cooked something up for him later. Or maybe not. Meh, the white walkers/others are so much better in the books. Everyone should read them!

Ya, the only thing is if I start reading it, I'll end up reading all the books. I would just spoil myself for the tv show and the excitement of each episode would diminsh for me personally. Quite frankly throughout most of the series, I thought the white walkers were just mindless zombie like creatures. That changed though when I saw them in the season 2 finale with the leader on horseback.
