and not much different to Uncharted multiplayer this gen. 

What's so special about Uncharted multiplayer? 

You originally had to buy an online pass if you bought the game used I believe.

Trust me... all of the manufacturers and developers would LOVE to find a way to increase 1st time sales of software and diminish rental and used games.  ALL of them.

I don't know about Uncharted, but PSABR and Resistance 3 did this.
