I don't know if, statistically, men and women are buying and playing the same games, but women are certainly a big part of the gaming community -- 47% in 2011 according to ESA.

In any event, female video game fans should be given the same opportunities and freedoms that male video game fans enjoy. They certainly shouldn't be considered second-class citizens. There are some industry veterans who are pushing this agenda forward -- Bonnie Ross and Kiki Wolfkill come to mind -- but there are many others who either ignore the problem or aggravate it.

Statistially they don't... but that's because of the extremes of the age spectrum.

Older women AND men are more likely to play facebook stye games and the like... except older women are less adverse to technology then older men.  Having been previously excluded from "how things work" there is less to alienate.

And well, with kids.   Kids play what their parents get them, and parents often fall prey to gender stereotypes in regards to their kids generally shoehorning them into something that a lot of people find don't fit.
