Because Sega was never "riding high" and self-destroyed themselves. They had about 8% of the market in the NES days. They bumped it up with the Genesis/Mega Drive by releasing early, but once the SNES released they were quickly overcome. They were always second fiddle, and were just pushed out by Sony and MS. They were never on top and didn't make any big mistakes to lose the top spot. They fought the good fight, just never had the 1st or 3rd party software to win, and didn't have the corporate deep pockets of MS or Sony to buy their way into the market.
