Which is as valid as to say that SEGA owns the IP.

No, it would only be the same if Platinum Games were bought by a larger publisher...like EA. 
No, it would only be the same if Microsoft did the exact same as Nintendo...like completely fund development.

You don't get the difference between paying marketing/timed exclusivity and completely funding the development.
