Games are about the experience, which encompasses everything. People who complain about Battlefield 4 reveal, what did you expect from a military based FPS? Its no different from people complaing about 2D mario...

In terms of character and story telling, the demo did an inredible job in my opinion, partially because of the character rendering but also through the scripting. Maybe people are confusing their preference of fantasy, for a lack of quality in games with realistic graphics. I just recently played Dishonoured, Limbo, Journey... All brilliant, all with a clear focus on gameplay, all amazing visuals (not necessarily realism) as well as story telling. I believe most AAA titles weight these 3 things pretty well regardless of what you think of its actual quality.

DMC-
Tomb Raider-
Metal Gear Rising-
Bioshock-
AC3-

Which of these games didn't concern itself with gameplay and only graphics, or even which of these games were obviously weighted more on graphics? Like many people today I get tired of the barrage of war based games, especially FPS which by there nature aim for realism and so appear the same, but things were not so different with all the generic action adventure games released last gen, and then all the platformers the gen before.

I don't think gameplay has moved as far as it can this gen, but I think its down to a lack of ambition. Nothing to do with graphics. Luckily we're at the point where the public and media are starting to respond (Both GOW's). Its nice that your game is fun, but its the exact same thing we've been playing for the last 5 years. Also attention to visuals and story can actually make games feel more unique, we can't expect ground breaking gameplay innovations every other day of the week.
