OK Turn on Luigi's Mansion 2, Sticker Star, Metroid Other M, Zelda Skyward Sword, or Galaxy 2. Is there any moment where there is more than one action you can usefully perform? Is there any moment where there isn't a giant flashing arrow telling you where to go next and every other path blocked? I'm not talking surprise, I'm talking user input making a difference. Good GAMEPLAY is where you feel empowered to achieve something: rewarded for exploring, or figuring out something, or achieving something difficult with much practice. Modern Nintendo games feel no different to modern AAA games that move you from one setpiece to the next along a narrow and highly visible path. Nintendo's path just has more wackiness and fewer explosions. At no time do YOU feel awesome. Nintendo asks you to go, isn't the DEVELOPER awesome? |
On the contrary, Sticker Star was roundly criticized for not telling the player precisely what to do in order to progress.
