Well yeah it is behind the scenes and I'm sure they are doing what they need to be doing, but isn't the phrase perception is reality? And because of it Sony gets better press right now, and their GDC presence was very dominant to the public. While not one sided for the developers.

Press means little to nothing almost a year before the release.  Who ever has the most attention during the holidays or launch is what you need to be looking at. Even E3 is way more important than anything that has happened in the first 6 months of the year.  GDC isnt even for gamers.  People made a big deal about nothing as usual.

This is totally and completely a false statement just generally looking at how the market operates. They are giving Sony the time to build an image around the PS4 and what it offers without showing anything in response. I know a fair amount of XBOX Faithfuls who are constantly getting more and more hyped with stuff that is being shown for the PS4, if they get sold on the PS4 early, the Nextbox will need an enormous showing to sway the people back whome have already been swayed. Hell, I know people who have pre-ordered the PS4 already based upon what has already been shown.

WiiU and 3DS (Even vita had a bit of hype) was both hyped majorly. None of them was very successful in the first few months.  Launch is more important than anything done pre-release.  Pre-release helps but it's certainly not the most imprtant

They all fell and stumbled because their support went flat after they launched

We just have to  hope that the same does not happen with PS4 and it's so far seeming like it wont happen

There was a rumor a while back basically saying that M$ didn't really have things ready so they were planning a "soft" launch for 720 which didn't sound so good but it was just a rumor though

Point is launch is more important.  Not saying Sony will make the same mistake but they sure did with the Vita and PS3.  All this talk about when is the right time is pointless.  The right time is when they both decide it is.  People will get hyped regardless if it is now or 5 months from now.  But when it all comes down to it the launch months will be what is important.

They go hand in hand.  You're not going to have a successful launch if you don't do anything to market your product in the months leading up to the launch.  No crap the launch is crucial, but you can't sit on your hands and just expect the launch to go well.  You need to build up the consumer interest, but at the same time have the games to actually back up that hype.  That's where the PS3 and Vita failed during their launch.  They had the hype but not the games.
