Just because you weigh one more than the other, doesn't mean the lighter one shouldn't be stopped as well. Correction: I was made fun of for my skin color and hair mainly by whites and latinos. Being made fun of for my pale skin and red hair is being made fun of my biological makeup, whether it is "race" or not. It's the same thing, even if, as you say, it isn't *quite* as bad given the more brutal history. It is still bad. And it still needs to be stopped. I wasn't called lazy, or anything random. I was called direct stereotypes for what I was born as. Your "lazy" and "fat" arguments hold nothing here. People should not be allowed to make fun of others and descriminate against them based on what that person was genetically born as and any stereotypes that come along with it.
Plain and simple. |
No, but it does show why people pay a lot more attention to one then the other. Which seems to be your complaint... which seems to be what your curious about.
Outside that... plenty of people are born with conditions that make them fat. (or lazy for that matter.)
Like I said, what happened to you sucked. It still doesn't compare though, it's not the context isn't quite there... it's that it's quite far from there. What happened to these people in the past was very clear and very real dehumization right down to legally... built into society as a whole.
What happened to you was someone picking on you just because you were different... it didn't even have to deal with an "ideal male bodytype" just more how you stood out at the time compared other people there. Were you in say ireland, or there were a few more people with the same skin tone, they'd of gone and picked on the short kid.
It sucks and i'm sure it could of sucked real hard... but it's not really the same level as having the whole of society more or less structured to subconsiously hold you down because stereotypes about what you should be are programmed into everyones head subcounsiously... even best most tolerant person could be racist or sexist if they don't keep it in mind. (Again, see harvard implicit results study. Even Malcolm Gladwell, who is half black genetically, and identifies as black racially found that he ended up being unconsiously racist against black people.)
To say it's not *quite* the same is an understatement.
It's not like everyone in the world is subconsiously programmed to make fun of ginger people.
If that were the case, and everytime someone made fun of you for it... you would of been in a hell of a lot more pain, no? That's certaintly a pretty big weight on your shoulders at that point. I think it's pretty obvious to see why someone would be extra sensitive about this stuff and why you would focus a lot more on not offending those people, since there is much stronger weight there.
What Stereotypes even exist about someome being a "ginger". The only thing that comes to mind is the South Park joke that they don't have souls. (Legitamite question here... I'm actually curious. Though that i have to ask is pretty telling in itself.)
