There could be more but I don't feel there's a lack. Ubisoft did great with Aveline in ACIII: Liberation, Lara Croft just got "reborn", Lightning is a strong character and there's plenty more. They had two this generation as far as I'm aware. Joanna Dark and Kameo.
I don't know if women are the new core or not but having games that target all audiences is great. I'd say all companies of the big publishers and developers have been doing a good job at this. Although I'd argue to say that women core gamers are looking for the same experiences as male core gamers. I have a lot of girl gamers that play with me, and I know girl gamers in person and they get excited just like males.
