I think the sales of Nintendogs + Cats on the 3DS in comparison to the DS version shows the writing is on the walls. I don't expect any expanded audience software to do as well on Wii U as it did on Wii. 2D Mario launched Wii to the stratosphere, yet NSMBU has not done the same for Wii U. If we can't rely on those games to replicate their prior success(which none appear to be doing)Wii U is nothing but a Gamecube as far as software content goes. Nintendo lacks the development teams to do much beyond what they have always done. N64 and Gamecube show us what those franchises can do without that the expanded audience pushing them higher.
I think the latter software starved years of the Wii, the intimidating controller, and higher cost of the system have alienated the expanded audience. Nintendo's bid to try to please all gamers backfired. They would need more developers and beefier specs to please the core audience and industry at large. The costs associated with that will scare away the expanded audience.
