The Gamecube and Xbox were very close in total hardware sales. The PS2 did better in part because people were buying it as a cheap DVD player....Much like a lot of people have done with the PS3 for Blu Ray...hence why a lot of 1st party PS3 games haven't done so well. The only thing that the PS4 is bringing to the table is a small bump in graphics.
The Wii U needs some of it's heavy hitters to come out and a $50 price reduction before it's going to move many units.
Also, while the Gamecube didn't set the world on fire, it's still the favorite system off all time by many.
Nintendo is sitting on a huge pile of cash right now....(they didn't need to sell their offices to finance a system launch). They'll be fine this gen even if they don't sell a ton of units. Sony on the other hand bet the farm. If the PS4 way under performs, Sony's in deep trouble.
Stop hating and start playing.
