My best advice, and what I use my self and tell others around me in the same situation, is to look for free clinics, or sliding scale clinics, and ask all of your local churches for help, whether you attend them or not they are often willing help. I dont have insurance my self and I have no issues yet, but I am younger and not into the part of my life were I will have issues yet. But check out all the free clinics. what county do you live in in New York, I will do some searches and see what I can find. with out knowing what county this is one of the places i found.

When I was without Medicaid before, I was hitting up a clinic at a local hospital.  I then ran into back issues and ended up having to delay the surgery, because of I could afford the anastesia.  So I now have permanent numbness in my left food.  Anyhow, I will need to see what can be come up with.  Issue is my hours and pay can fluctuate so I go from anywhere from around $350 a week to under $200.
