Good indicators that a console will be a success are:

No hardware flaws, such as faulty processors, being a hardware addon, unnessecary difficulty of programming, etc.

Acceptable price level.

Breadth of game library. (How many genres are adequately represented on the system)

Killer apps. (Games that become so popular, that people buy the system in droves for them, like Sonic 2, Halo, Tetris, Super Mario Bros or Wii Sports)

honestly, that really doesnt matter much. look at the ps2, a bitch to develop for. ps vita, one of the easiest consoles to develop for. now look at the sales.

Maybe the correct variable might be 'too damn costly to develop for'... of course I have no idea between the PS2 or PS3 for example which is more "costly" to develop for. I would assume PS3 because of the whole graphics thing and well, programming is one thing, but then you have to put a lot of money 3D to keep it 'cutting edge'... and if that is cumbersome, then it becomes time-consuming and designers paid by the hour = expensive.

Just a thought.
