If you want then you can blame Sony to remove this feature after 2007 with news models... the first EU PS3 had this feature and some 80GB US too.

I'll explain...

EU 60GB PS3 consoles had PS2 hardware inside (The GPU from the PS2) it emulated the CPU in software.

US 80GB PS3 consoles had PS2 hardware inside, both the GPU and the CPU were in there, there was no software emulation.

EU/US PS3s since then (which haven't been available for over 5 years at reail) have no PS2 hardware inside.

The PS2 Classics use a totally software based emulation of the PS2, it has been widely assumed since then that the reason for not making the PS2 completely open and allowing PS2 retail disks to boot is because the emulator is limited and would be too costly for Sony to tweak each emulator configuration on a game by game basis (as is the case the Xbox emulator on the Xbox 360, which also has no Xbox hardware inside).

However, it turns out that in fact, 90% of PS2 retail games run perfectly fine with this entirely software based emulator with no need for any tweaking of settings for the emulator.

Earlier on in the thread I guess that around 70% of PS2 retail disks ran properly with no problems, since then a few days has passed and lots of people have contributed to a compatibility list that a quick scan through shows about 90% of games run perfectly, with full speed, full sound, no glitches and no problems at all.

About 5% don't run at all and about 5% run with graphical glitches/freezes but are still playable for the most part.

Sony did not "disable" the backward compatibilty as you describe it, but removed completely the PS2 hardware inside that was being used in the 60GB EU/80GB US models.

As some people here have mentioned, they believed this PS2 software emulator wasn't unlocked so more money could be made from releasing HD classics, the recent developements in the software emultor being opened up by hackers proves this theory to be true. Only NOW has this been proved, until now, this could only be speculation. There were arguments to support the idea that it was simply down to the emulator not being optimized enough, as the availability of PS2 Classics on PSN was a rather bizarre mix of mostly unheard of very old games that nobody wanted to play.

This is not to criticize Sony for that decision, as a lot of money must have been invested in developing the software emulator to allow nearly all PS2 games to be emulated on a console that has only 256MB of system RAM and a GPU based on 6 year old technology of a 7800GT by nvidia.

A 7800GT/256MB RAM/3.2Ghz long pipelined CPU on a PC wouldn't stand a chance at running anything except 2D games at anywhere near full speed on PCSX2 which has been in developement for years.
