It's silly to worry. I've been to China three times in the last 8 years, it was a surprisingly wonderful experience. The only place where I felt a little discomfort was in Hong Kong.

I would be much more worried in the US where there is a high crime rate, lots of murders, and all sorts of people with guns.

In the US, the crime rate has gone down considerably over the last decade. Also, most crime and gun violence in the US usually takes place in a lot of the major cities. Finally, most gun owners in the US keep their guns locked up at home. Only a few places like Texas allow people to be armed in public.

The crime rate also varries from state to state.
