I think the full game installs are a way to simplify matters, so every game can be a digital download with no extra effort.
There is a difference between a full install and installing random access data for faster loading. Running fmv or continuous chunks of data from the optical drive while loading random access data from the hdd is faster then hdd alone. Wasn't it Halo 3 that was optimized this way too? (ran slower completely installed to hdd)
The biggest game installs on ps3 are 4 or 5 gb, most a lot less. It's a waste of space to put everything on the hdd.
I think what they are trying to do is make it more like PC where you can just click on your games from your hard drive to change games rather than changing discs or possibly quicker load times.
That would imply a way to tie the actual disc or license to your account, which implies blocking 2nd hand sales or a system in which to transfer ownership back to the disc. You either need the disc for verification when starting the game, or a disc that becomes 'worthless' after you install the game.
Always on / always connected indeed only implies a wii connect 24 mode, or ps+ auto updates. (Or are ps+ update checks scheduled? I've never turned it on as I have an internet cap. Do not want it auto updating a 100 old games) Nothing more then a standby mode that maintains an internet connection. Maybe it's for pvr functionality and/or downloading your new episodes as they become available.
I assume it will be configurable and I'll be turning it off, just as I don't want the Wii or ps+ or pc/laptop to nose around on the internet by themselves. 'Notify me if new updates are available for download' is what I would like to see for consoles when I turn it on.
