I do that all the time, so that I have something to play when I get the console ;) Bought Eternal Darkness, Rogue Squadron 2 and 3 and probably 1 or 2 Wii games half a year before I got the Wii. Later I bought Fallout 3, Binary Domain and Oblivion 3-4 months before I bought my PS3. But it's because I'm usually a late adopter (the exceptions were Wii and Vita though), so I can buy these games at a low price, so when I know I will be getting a given console, I hunt good deals on games for it.
Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!
