Well, at least that makes me have higher hopes that the game will release within the next five years *and* they might actually occasionally show gameplay at press events!

If I were being hopeful, I would also hope that they take the gameplay in a new direction. Turn based combat (and even the newer turn based combat like FFXIII had) is just outdated. In 1996 you couldn't have characters flip around and do awesome stuff, in 2013 you can. It just makes it so bad when you put something like, say, FFXIII and Uncharted next to each other where you're actually doing the crazy stuff.

Versus has always been an action RPG. Did you watch the 2011 trailer?

Anyway, we'll see...

  • IF SE can stop with the crappy emo protagonist crap.
  • IF SE can actually provide a good story and good characters.
  • IF SE will actually accept Sony's help on how to make an action game and not some really bad hybrid or some generic attempt.

I can understand not wanting the emo personality although I don't know if the Japanese would complain that much about it to begin with. But we can't also expect a western-like type of personality because Square is not going to alienate the Japanese fans. I have this notion that somehow the characters that could click in Japan are those that are either sentimental but look badass, or the extremely funny ones.

About the Sony hands in the project (if that is really the case), we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. Maybe their help for Square is a about money and/or getting stuff done in the PS4 machine. Sony may not necessarily have any involvement in the creative aspect of the game.

That's why I hope Sony takes more control and makes SE do the things SE doesn't want to do.

SE's western games have been kicking ass lately but anyone in charge of the FF series refuses to see it.  I know Sony sees it and, if true, we can only hope that they write enough control in the contract to make SE actually become current.

I wouldn't put it like "refusing to see" how the western division is "kicking ass". It isn't like we are discussing how FF developers are saying: "Yeah, those games are kind of good but not good enough." I think you are trying to say that they aren't making FF more western, but that hardly has anything to do with how they view other games, does it?

If you take Square western games' latest sells in Japan, you wouldn't see those games as successful there. Actually, I don't think any of those games have passed the best selling FF worldwide. What Square needs to do is to improve FF, return it to past glory. Final Fantasy could use some things from western rpgs, but not as to lose itself and become one of them. I doubt FF would ever become something like Skirim or The Witcher, at least when it comes to character models, personalities, and comedic style. To do so is to alienate the Japan audience, at least that is what I feel will happen. Unless Japanese gamers start to embrace western games I don't see FF getting that gritty, in your face style of games, they will remain with flashy characters, stylish clothing and hairstyles, and emotional and theatrical-like type of storytelling.

You may also be talking about gameplay, I know you mentioned that before. But try to imagine how the gameplay of western games affects the general feel and art style of games. I think we could either see if something western can fit in FF if we see it not affecting that art style from the games.

I guess everyone has freedom to voice their desires and what they would like FF to be, I am also voicing mine and putting here what I think is possible and what I think is not. To each his own I guess.

I am completely unable to conceive the idea that Sony helping with the developing of a game can turn into something bad.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:
