Hey brah, at least use the definition that is applicable i.e. the noun, not the verb. Same source:

b. a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way: a hopeless social retard.
The problem with these terms is there are multiple definitions...and some of them "disparaging". They are related by definition, but not by context.
"That book is gay/retarded" - obviously the book's sexual preference isn't in question, nor is its mental capacity.
"You are gay/retarded is on the order of: stupid, dumb, idiot, moron, lame, etc" and really has no bearing upon sexuality - not offensive in regard to sexuality.
