I think the term hardcore/core - which defines primarily a gamers consumption/devotion to the industry as a whole - has been confused with Pro/Comp/l33t gamer in the last few years. Most Pro/Comp/l33t gamers are also the core/hardcore, as is par for the course in their skillset - but hardcore/the core has always, and still does - mean the kind of gamer who goes and buys a system, 3 games and a second controller on launch day type consumer.
