It's a sequel nobody asked for to a game that wasn't all that well received. FF fans aren't clueless the fanbase at least KNOWS what this game is. If Square does a good job with it and it does infact have the magic/quality that most Final Fantasy games are known for, i'm fairly certain it will sell well.
I don't think 1 bad game and an unwanted sequel will ruin one of the longest standing franchises in gaming. If it's a quality game, I think people will be more than happy to buy it.
