The console on top is ususally the console that does the least innovating, the consoles selling less are the ones that do the more innovating to try to gain more sales.
The reason Sony did so much innovating this gen is because they were behind the 8-ball sales wise and had to do something to try and increse sales.
If Sony is dominant like in the PS1-2 era, then expect them to kick back and let the 3rd parties do all the work while they rake in the royalties.
