I think cross gen titles will help. Who wouldn't want to have the awesome graphically enhanced version?

Thats true but, most people won't spend $400+ just for prettier graphics. From that article, "63% of current Xbox 360 owners waited at least THREE YEARS [+ two months]  after  the 360 launched, before buying an Xbox 360".

They don't need most people to have a successful launch. I think they will have a lot more early adopters than the 360+ps3 which both had "meh" launch line ups. For Many Hardcore gamers, I think having superior versions of big AAA titles+ a few exclusives will be enticing provided they have the disposable income to justify picking up a new console at launch. Inevitably those more picky with their money will wait til price cut/ more exclusive titles/cheaper titles. The masses never adopt a new console early in its cycle unless its a phenomonom like the orginal wii. But the masses aren't need for a succesfull launch...  I suspect they will both perform similar to the wii U in its openning month, mayb a bit less because of the heated competition, but they will keep momentem going into 2014 unlike the wii U going into 2013;

The problem with the Wii U was that

1. Its versions of COD+AC were not obviously superior and it didn't recieve the majority of 3rd party titles that were announced at the time. (MGS/Tomb Raider/Bioshock/ Crysis/ Dead space, I could go on forever). In the case of the ps4/720, for the moment at least there is only one big 3rd party title coming out in fall 2013 which hasn't been announced to arrive on next gen systems  (Lightning Returns: FFXIII)

2. lack of vision for the future. Even at the time of the systems launch the only post launch titles we'd been treated to were Rayman, Pikmin and Wonderfull 101 and Beyonetta. Although super smash bros was verbally announced, none of the titles shown are likely to be massive blockbusters, although I expect all of them to pass 1m.

In the case of the ps4/720 we haven't even reached e3 and we know it will recieve these next gen exclusives:

-Dragon Age 3, Witcher 3, Thief 4, Cyberpunk 2033, Mass Effect 4 (verbally announced)... and thats only 3rd party, in the case of Sony; Knack and Infamous 2 will probably be released after launch. Microsoft will of course have their own exclusive line up. Again plenty more next gen exclusives will probably be announced at E3 and by the time of holiday 2013, the 720/ps4 line will not be comparable to the Wii U.
