what bothers me, is how did that horrible Alien Colonial marines game beat Playstation allstars in sales.

i think playstation all stars had a good attempt at first go and was crazily ove hyped and sales predictions. But sadly it will never live up to smash in sales and game quality.

That's the power of brand. COD on Vita sold extremely well despite being an atrocious game.  Also, Aliens is a shooter (we know how people love shooters these days) and a multiplatform game. Even MOH pulled good numbers at the start and that was a bad game as well. There were a number of issues that kept PSASBR behind commercially speaking. I’d also argue that part of that has to do with what was missing in the game as well (certain key characters).

Yes I think some people were looking at this game as a ‘smash’ killer of sorts. That alone lifted expectations to an unrealistic point. That would doom any game to failure unless it is near perfection, and most of us can agree that PSABR has its fair share of flaws. But as you mentioned I think for a first attempt it was a good shot. I liked the first Smash on N64 and played it daily for about 2 or 3 years, but it wasn’t until Melee released that I ate, lived and breathed Smash – the jump was that big. Hopefully, if there is a follow up to PSASBR they will address the issues of the first game while making enough improvements to make a similar leap  akin to the one between Smash N64 and Melee.
