So, Journey is great.....but man is it depressing

Yeah, I think the developers wanted the game to be depressing and sad. That would explain why the main character is a magical tissue (Kleenex perhaps); this acts as a subliminal source of sorrow, depression, and a host of other emotions not found in many games.
