I stopped caring about BC when I've noticed what a nonfactor it actually was for me. Even back on the PS2 I've only ever replayed FF IX before basically moving it over to the PSP and not caring from that point on about the BC.

Thing is that it's a smart business move for Sony. At one point it was bound to happen anyway, as the following article says:

I agree to most that's said there. After the developer backlash against the difficulties of the Cell, after all of its problems and so on, I think there was no actual choice for Sony except to create something easier to develop for...which will probably be compatible with future generations of consoles (PS5, 6 or however high they'd go).
At this point I'm rather confident Sony will come up with a solution down the line, which won't be perfect, but it'll be at least an attempt of a truce with the disgruntled part of the fanbase.
