I think the PS3 had a worse start, but it was a powerful console that managed to develop all its potential through the years, something that looks unlikely for the Wii U since Nintendo follows a different approach.
I't looks like Nintendo was overconfident with the success of the Wii, It could have been better if the had launched a true next-gen console with specs a little under PS4/720 even if they had to sell it for $399 at launch and then drop the price when the PS4/720 released. Sony and Microsoft would have been in serious trouble then because they would be competing against a similar console that is significantly cheaper.
