I recently realized what the fundamental problem of the middle-east conflict is:
The fact that Israel doesn't even really know what it wants - this is, what to do with the palestinians. Their leaders do not want the peace process because there is simply no solution that wouldn't split the population. Both the one-state solution and the two-state-solution would piss a lot of people off. They don't even have a plan, so instead of actually going into the peace process, their leaders are simply doing anything to avoid it.
If a powerful person (like Obama?) actually wanted to solve the middle-east process, the solution isn't finding the perfect solution, but forcing the Israeli government to finally decide what they want.
