t takes more than a redesign of the hardware.
I really disliked the original bulky DS design, but now me and my girlfriend both own a DS-lite. We love light-hearted games for on the road, But the PSP is clearly much more powerful in terms of graphics (+larger display), possible game complexity and multi-media features. I think Sony did really well distinguishing itself from Nintendo's offerings, if they wouldn't have I think Sony wouldn't have succeeded in penetrating the Nintendo dominated handheld games market.

Sure the PSP is more expensive and this is also a factor in the device selling less than the NDS, but the device judged for itself 20 million sales is already most excellent. The best competition Nintendo has seen since the launch and success of the original Gameboy (BTW the Lynx and GameGear were also technically more powerful around that time, but they were failures due to various reasons)

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."
