Probably thought that life cycle was synonymous with support cycle. As in continued first party support. His argument in support of his first statement made it seem like that was what he was talking about. That Sony was going to continue to provide first party support for its platform right up to the ten year mark. I had it explained to me as exactly that over and over again on these forums. I know it isn't likely that Sony will ever be held to account for fostering false expectations. At least on these forums, and many other such forums such as this, but doesn't every promise broken, or at least perceived to have been broken. Damage the brand to one degree or another. What would you say to someone who thought that they were going to get that level of support for ten straight years. To keep them from holding a grudge against Sony, and maybe even deciding to stop gaming with them? It is really a pretty good question that deserves a answer. We have a number of brand haters on these forums. That went from being supporters of a brand. Until they were slighted by that brand one too many times, and now they spit venom on those brands constantly. How do you turn somebody around based on what this story is tell us. I sure as hell have no clue as to how to do that. I know it is a common practice on these forums to argue that the failings of another justifies the failings of oneself. The thing is that is just all about trying to change the subject. It isn't any kind of a defense. I cannot commit a crime against someone, and offer up as my defense. That somebody else committed a crime against somebody else, and since. That person and I are equally bad. I should be let off the hook for what I did. Microsoft and Nintendo didn't create this understanding in the heads of Sony fans. That is something Sony did to its fans. Anyway back to the point. How do you explain to a Sony fan that may feel betrayed in this instance by Sony. That they aren't actually being betrayed? |
Where did you ever get the implication that Sony meant the PS3 would get heavy first party support for ten years? I don't recall Sony saying that. What they did say was that the PS3 would have a ten-year life cycle, which can only be confidently interpreted as receiving support and being on sale for ten years. And as it stands now, nothing suggests that the PS3 won't have support during the next few years. They've even explained their ten-year plan by directly referencing the PS2 as an example. Meaning by ten-year plan, they mean a life cycle similar to the Ps2, rather than ten years of heavy first party support like you're suggesting. I'm not sure how you came up with that idea. |
I was most certainly never under that illusion that Sony would offer up such a level of support. In fact a vociferously argued against that logic time and again. I repeatedly told members in this community that felt those comments were a absolute gaurantee. That they were anything but that, and that they were just plain meaningless. They were never a argument for anything. What I am referring to isn't the merit of the argument. Seeing as I entirely disagreed with it for the duration of the preceding generation.
What I am talking about is the myth that was perpetuated about these comments. By legions of Sony fans on these forums and others. While I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever. That a number of the people who treated this like a article of faith during debates. Were in fact utterly full of shit, and would say just about anything to exhonerate, or defend Sony no matter what. That isn't to say however that to a number of posters who argued this point of view. That for them this was a promise carved into the bedrock.
For better or worse the logic was never that Sony would provide support, but that Sony would provide a certain high level of support. Did a certain group of people blindly choose to believe they meant more then their literal meaning. I have to say absolutely, because I spent months arguing the meaningless of these statements to them. So there are people, and some of which are probably still on these forums today. That believed they would still get a strong stream of first party games on the platform for ten straight years.

So if you agree that the belief that the PS3 would get heavy first party support for ten years is fanboy nonsense, why are you playing this game pretending like this is something bad for Sony or reasonable consumers? All you've shown is that fanboys use stupid arguments when convenient. I guess this is you trying to get even with them? |
No I am pointing out that there were actual genuine victims, and celebrating this news is taking pleasure in their misfortune. I don't like the notion of anybody being treated as if they were expendable. Sony with help from some rather insidious supporters actively perpetrated a campaign of misinformation. That is now seemingly resulting in decent gamers taking it up the ass. They were told they were getting a console that was going to have fantastic support for ten years, and now it is looking like they are only going to get half of that.
You know this may come as somewhat of a revelation to you, but I am a gamer first and foremost. I don't like to see my fellow gamers getting fucked over by any company. Especially if they get taken for a lot of fucking money. Sometimes what is best for Sony, or for the companies most rabid fans. Isn't what is in the interest of most of the gamers on the platform. If you have the money to buy the PS4, and buy all of these games starting on day one. Well that is wonderful for you, but you shouldn't be acting as if the people who are going to be staying with the PS3 for two or three more years deserve to be treated with such utter contempt by Sony.
Sony supporting its new platform is a good thing, but what isn't good is their obvious willingess to abandon their loyal customers on earlier platforms. Who may have believed they were going to get better then this. I mean it is nothing less then dispicable on their part. They didn't need to retask every single one of their studios to making games for the new platform. They could have held two or three back to support their other customers. Setting aside the PS3 for a moment how is this even remotely justifiable given that the Vita hasn't even been on the market for two years.
Maybe you can help me with this. Why is it I am the only one in this thread arguing that PS3/Vita owners deserve to be treated with more respect. What I want is for this community to acknowledge their worth. Seventy million plus customers are getting abandoned, and there is no good reason to let it pass without any comment being made on their behalf. Dwell on this for a moment. Even if you plan to move onto greener pastures. You are probably as of right now part of a community that is already having the screws put to it. Be glad that you are planning to get out, but take a moment to feel something for those that are going to be left behind.
How hard is it really to say good for me, but I feel sorry for the other guy. You know what the opposite of love is. It isn't hate, but indifference. Just plain not caring about the effect of something is going to have on someone else. If I buy the next box, and someone on my friends list cannot afford to buy one, and I found out that Microsoft wasn't going to be supporting that platform with first party games anymore. I would at least take a moment to recognize the unfairness of it all for them.
