You can still point and click.  There is an issue with the moving a pointer on the screen that the touch pad on the controller should address.  You also have buttons on the controller also.

Sure, the touchpad approximates the mouse and you could use it, in the same way that you could use a twig to play tennis. 

Well the super skilled ping pong players use spoons and stuff to get good dont' they?  Maybe the ultra elite Total Rome players will buy the console version to practice, cause if you can get good on a console then you would total kick ass on the keyboard+mouse set up.
