My issue with paying to play online is that it is harder to justify it if you play on multiple platforms. For example, I alternate between my PC, PS3, 360, and Wii, depending on what games are out, but when it's a 360 exclusive that I want to play that has multiplayer, I have to reconsider activating my account or not purchasing the game, whereas I can easily jump in on the other platforms.
