Interesting that there seem to be many people who've never heard of the awesome Commander Keen series.
Probably even more people don't know that Commander Keen was developed in 1990 by the same company that became world famous three years later for another game posted in the OP- id Software.
OP missed the great opportunity to compare Ron Gilbert's The Cave to Ron Gilbert's Maniac Mansion. Myst - bah!
