No. Charging for online is the most ridiculous thing to ever happen in gaming.

You mean...supporting online is a ridiculous thing? Because now you can say good things about the Playstation Network, but things were very, very different before Microsoft pushed forward Live. I do, however, that in this day and age, they should drop the goddamm fee.

nintendo, sony, and steam let you play online for free M$ has no reason to

Nintendo - different business model, different online services, different customer market (mostly). Q4 2012 net loss of $460 million.

Sony -  different business model, similar online services. Q3 2012 net loss of $114 million, continues to lose money in Q4 and beyond.

Steam - different market, different business model, not really related to console gaming.

Microsoft - Q4 2012 net profit of $6.38 billion.

If all companies continue at the same trend, which one(s) do you think are most likely to exist in the future?  Which company would you rather invest in? Which ones are most likely to be in the game industry in the future?

Now tell me which one of the above companies are most likely to change how they make money in the near future?

"Microsoft has no reason to." -  I can't stop laughing at that statement.
