I am not sure where you're getting your numbers from, but it seems you are comparing a rounded down number from Microsoft's last quarterly profits (6.2 billion USD$ profit for the fall quarter) with some sort of estimate of all of the money Sony has left (note, Sony's 2012 financials were a 5.74 billion USD$ loss). |
SNE on 12/31/12 reported that they had 8.023 BIllion in cash on hand. MSFT reported 6.017 Billion in cash on hand. MSFT does have 60 billion in short-term investments, but I'm just comparing cash levels. Microsoft didn't get its money from its gaming division, and the gaming division is not why Sony is losing money. Sony isn't in huge trouble either, they keep their cash level pretty steady by shifting around other resources. At this point in time, they can still sell debt on the bond market. They are rated BBB+ which is still investment grade, and they still pay a dividend.
I own neither MSFT or SNE (and have never owned either) so I gain nothing financially from the performance of either company.
