Pft, you've got it close... but not quite.
If you look at the Pokemon world you'd realize it's actually a dystopian post apocalyptic world told through the eyes of brainwashed child soldiers.
I mean...
Why can't you catch "fainted" pokemon? (They're dead!)
It's really ok that the path to EVERY city is covered by dangerous monsters. (Note that most people don't have pokemon and the prof often stops the protagonist from getting his face chewed off by a rabid Ratata.
