It's a psychological thing. We want to know what we'll be getting when we put out money for the counter, we want to know how it's going to look in our living room.
Honestly, think the word "PS3" in your head. What comes to mind? Maybe it's different for you, but for me, I think of the actual box first.
Maybe Sony didn't think it's important, but clearly it is to a lot of people. If they want to see it, they want to see it. If they're disappointed at not seeing it, that's their right. Accordingly, Sony make a mistake.
