As XII was being finished Versus was in development this was confirmed by SE themselves as both Versus and XII were PS2 games at first...

Initially, we were thinking about making FFXIII on PS2 and FFVersusXIII on a next-gen platform. Yoshinori Kitase

Before XIV laucnhed, they they had just released FF XIII which was also delayed one year because of the Xbox version. Actually my argument is not a strawman one but one of simple observation: In recent years Square always had one Final Fantasy game released exactly at the end of each generation: IX and XII.  Versus could be the this gen's end game.

I am not trying to defend them, I am merely stating what we know. The reason they prioritised games ahead of Versus is most likely because they were far smaller productions and sure deals and Versus a risky concept. And of course everything got delayed by A Realm Reborn.

I'm sorry but reason wants it that FF Versus XIII was never a priority.

Absolute rubbish if it was never a priority it would never have been shown back at E3 2006 that's grasping at more straws then even before considering that SE's own approach to XIII was to turn each FF installment into a mini-franchise like what they did with the FFVII Compilation so what they did ith Versus was no more risky then the VII Saga it was already tried and tested with success, the E3 showing alone shows the game had high priority before SE began cocking up. So Versus was intended to be a next gen game that makes things even worse then thought as Nomura's team started development on it in November 2005 5 months before XII was due for release that makes SE more of a circus then I thought.

What you've done here is not observation it's making excuses for them, Versus' chances of being this gens end game look bleak because end games usually have content out in the media before the end of the gen is approaching, this time next year we'll possibly have all 3 next gen platforms out, in fact PS4 may be revealed in 2 days. Versus was a big priority for SE but then they like every other developer realized HD development had big hurdles and began faltering and never fully recovered which has hurt the devlopment of other games a testament to this is how their handheld division is doing well while the rest of the company is in disarrays I still remember their comment on towns not being possible in HD games when XIII arrived.
